PAINTINGS
Wagner considered his work research into the connection between colour and form. He produced about 4,000 paintings and sketches which can be divided roughly into three periods: The first period is characterized by bold colours and clear cut images. The themes are mainly mystical. They include: the ‘Madonna and Child’, ‘Baptism’, ‘Initiation’, and other biblical themes. In the second period plants, animals and other nature motifs are featured strongly. Other strands of creative thought took in the secrets of creation, and of the human being. In attempting to answer the question of how form comes out of colour, Wagner developed a methodical, scientific way of working. His experiments led to sequences of paintings showing metamorphosis in various forms. ( see: A Glance into Nature’s Workshop and Animal Metamorphosis by G.Wagner which belong to this period .) The third period takes in some earlier motifs, enhanced and elaborated, plus new ones which seem almost to lift the veil seperating visible and invisible worlds. Light-filled colour and flowing movement characterize this final phase.
In about 1970 he changed his choice of medium from conventional water colour to plant pigments which introduced softer forms and looser colouring.
